Mac OS/Windows Install the latest version of QuickTime from Apple Computer. There is an very easy installer which you can download from the web. QuickTime is free and fast. Windows can view the movies using Microsoft plug-ins, but QuickTime is preferred. If you download QuickTime 4.0 get at least the Internet edition (minimal does not work). If you encounter a "Running out of Memory…" warning on the Mac and are running pre OS X, restart Netscape with more memory (12MBytes should work, select the Nescape icon in the Finder, Get Info, and adjust the Preferred Memory amount)

SGI You should be able to view the movies already if you are running Netscape 4.0 or later. If you have trouble viewing the movies look under Preferences (Navigator:Applications) in Netscape and set "QuickTime Video" mime type to be handled by the MoviePlayer plug-in. MoviePlayer works well but is a little slow, you can also download the movies and view them with XAnim 2.8 or later, but XAnim is buggy and does not work well with Netscape. If you would like to use XAnim 2.8 follow the instructions below. 02 workstations do not have the computational horsepower needed to smoothly play movies of this size, but you can get the basic idea.

Linux and Sun Now for real setup fun. There are several ways to view the movies in these web pages, but there are major problems and bugs, at least with the free versions. You can either cobble together a system that views all the web pages, but has access to movie controls only through a bug in Plugger 3.0, or you can download each movie and view them separately with animation controls but miss the guided tours. There is a new comercial solution for Linux, where they use a version of Wine to allow the use of Windows plugins. The star and selling point of the ~$30 solution is the use of the QuickTime pluggins. The reviews of this have been very positive, but I have not tried this solution. The free solutions are listed below and work, but are buggy.

Inline Viewing To view the movies you will need to download two separate packages, XAnim to view the animations, and Plugger to link XAnim into Netscape and handle the html <embed> tags. Xanim 2.8 or later is needed to view the movies, unfortunately an old version of XAnim (1997) is included in RedHat 6.0. You will also need to download Plugger 3.0. Full instructions follow.

Download XAnim 2.8 (note that 2.7 is old and will not work)

untar the xanim archive tar -xf xanim2801.tar
go into the xanim2801 folder cd xanim2801
  make xanim executible make
move the executible "xanim" into a binary directory where your system can find it

Download Plugger 3.0

The makefile included in the Plugger 3.0 download has an error in it. The following instructions work around the error in the Plugger makefile (which is supposed to just copy a file to a directory)
unzip and untar download tar -zxf plugger-3.0...tar.gz
go into plugger-3.0 directory cd plugger-3.0
copy plugger.so to .netscape/pluggins/ (make pluggins folder if necessary) cp plugger.so ~/.netscape/plugins/
copy pluggerrc to .netscape cp pluggerrc ~/.netscape/
  restart netscape
check Preferences in Netscape, make sure QuickTime Animation is set to be handled by the pluggin Plugger 3.0

This setup will play the movie immediately upon loading (bug) and has no control over the animation (Plugger 3.0 bug). However, if you reload the page in Netscape 4.61, the animation will appear in a separate floating window (another bug). Typing "z" will bring up a control window that will allow control of the animation, including the ability to read the instructions.

Downloading For this you will need to obtain XAnim 2.8 or later, unfortunately an old version of XAnim (1997) is included in RedHat 6.0 and most unix distributions. In order to view the movies go to the index pages, and select the download link for each movie. This system allows careful study of the movies on Linux, but no tours and there are still bugs in Xanim, notably while trying to play an image sequence backwards.

Download XAnim 2.8 (note that 2.7 is old and will not work)

untar the xanim archive tar -xf xanim2801.tar
go into the xanim2801 folder cd xanim2801
  make xanim executible make
move the executible "xanim" into a binary directory where your system can find it
edit Netscape Preferences (Navigator:Applications) so that QuickTime Video is handled by the external application xanim ( %s hands file to xanim)   xanim %s
