Tethered Balloon Protocol

Date: Monday 8/6/2001
Two balloon launches to 1000 ft. measuring pressure, temperature, relative humidity, and Electric potential.

Balloon1

Equipment: balloon, payload, stopwatch, protractor and plumb bob
Payload: Labpro datalogger, Barometer, Relative humidity, Thermometer
Total weight of payload: 2 lbs

Procedure: When start labpro, start letting out line and start stopwatch so that ground time and daq time roughly correlated. Every 100ft. stop letting out line (record time!) hold for 2 minutes in order to get many samples at a certain height. Then continue.

Sample rate (same for all 3 probes): max. is 2.67 samples per second for 50 minutes we'l1 do 1 sample per second. Will average over 3 samples for a data point.

Altitude Estimate: Know how much line is let out, use plumb blob and protractor to write down angle for each stop, in order to estimate altitude.
Ascent requirement: Hold for 2 minutes every 100ft. of line in order to take data.

Test Procedure: Do a full test for 40 minutes, download data, examine data on pc. erase data in labpro, do a partial test for 10 minutes, download data, examine data on pc, erase data in labpro -ready to launch!

Balloon2

Equipment: balloon, payload, Electrometer
Payload: wire hooked at other end to electrometer, and digital camera facing downward and set to record images every 1 minute.
Total weight of payload: 1-1/2 lb

Procedure: Let out line, every 50ft. stop letting out line, hold for 2 minutes in order to stabilize, record measurement Then continue.

Altitude Estimate: Know how much line is let out, use plumb blob and protractor to write down angle for each stop, in order to estimate altitude.

Ascent requirement: Hold for 2 minutes every 50ft. of line in order to take data.

Test Procedure: Test connections. Test readings on ground at different positions.
