1) Teachers will have access to multimedia materials, lab activities, and information which supports physics and physical science curriculum in high energy physics astrophysics.
2) Students and teachers will use multimedia presentations to learn about high energy physics & astrophysics, including instrument design construction. The presentations will be a "living textbook", presenting linked pictures, text, sound, and animations which will support literacy and connect students to the process of scientific research.
At UCSC, SCIPP the Department of Physics are doing amazing science ! I have developed a 7-component outreach plan suggesting ways to connect this work to local secondary schools, in the hopes of improving education in this highly abstract (and therefore often neglected) area of physics.
One component of this plan includes the development of multimedia materials (web site and/or CD-ROM). I am working on a multimedia materials package about the GLAST (Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope) project which I believe addresses the conceptual difficulties my students would face when attempting to learn about GLAST, gamma-rays, and telescopes. The package will include HTML documents, a Powerpoint presentation, outside links, and lab activities, and can be distributed via CD-ROM or by downloading from a server site using Fetch software.
Computer, CD burner, Internet access, Lab access, Researcher access, server space (optional).
a) Components of the outreach plan will be discussed by IISME teachers and prioritized. Assessment can be by count of teacher and student involvement in aspects of the program and written evaluations from participants.
b) The GLAST multimedia package on CD-ROM will be locally distributed through LoPPA, the Loma Prieta Physics Alliance, a group of local physics teachers. Evaluation forms will accompany the CD-ROM, and will be returned to me after teachers use the CD in their classroom.
