Title: Outreach program and Teacher Workshop - Introducing particle physics into the high-school curriculum

Abstract

To design and implement a physics outreach program based at UCSC aimed at area physics teachers and providing access to university resources. And in addition to recruit ten area physics teachers to attend a 2-3 week long workshop on particle physics and ways to introduce it into the high-school curriculum.

Outreach concept

The UCSC physics department and SCIPP have resources which could benefit local high-school science departments. They also have a vested interest in the development of potential science students for the UC system.

Fall Workshop

As a first step the UCSC physics department and SCIPP will host a one-day workshop on Saturday, November 13, 1999 for area science teachers. The workshop will include guest lectures on current physics topics, a survey introduction to current outreach/professional development options for teachers, experience of past participants, and a panel discussion of current and future possibilities for interactions between UCSC physics, teachers and schools.

Here is the tentative agenda:

I. Morning

II. Afternoon

III. Experience in RET Program

IV. Other Topics of Discussion

V. Collaboration with Physics Department

VI. Lectures

VII. Tours

VIII. Workshops
