When attending a SCIPP event during a weekday please be sure to purchase a parking permit at any one of the parking booths (one is located at the entrance of campus). If the event falls during a weekend you will not need a permit. Due to the construction work on campus, the lot closest to the Natural Science Building is lot 139 which is located across the street behind Baskin Engineering Building and the Communications building. There will be an upcoming "Modern Physics Workshop"
located at the University of California Santa Cruz. Participants will have the
opportunity to further their knowledge and application in several areas of
quantum mechanics, particle physics, and cosmology. The Santa Cruz Institute
for Particle Physics (SCIPP), in addition to the Quarknet Program (Fermi Lab), will host the
workshop. Quarknet is a high school teacher's program organized
by Fermi National Accelerator
Laboratory (FNAL), the large elementary particle physics laboratory, and is funded by the
National Science Foundation (NSF). Our implementation is being organized by Kelly
Clark (kellyc@cats.ucsc.edu) and Stuart Briber (solar9@ix.netcom.com).
Participants will have the opportunity to enhance their high school physics curriculum, discuss the current challenges of the field, and attend UCSC physics seminars. The program dates are June 26 through July 11, 2000, with two days off for the 4th of July holiday. Participation in the program is full-time.
The program is open to 12 teachers, and the stipend is $300/per week. Academic credit will be available. The Quarknet Summer Workshop will cover the following areas:
Research Experience for Teachers (RET)
involves teachers in the ongoing research of the laboratories
of SCIPP and the UCSC Physics Department. Funding is provided
by the UCSC's Educational Partnership Center (EPC), US-ATLAS, and NSF. We also
will be working with IISME in a possible transfer plan.
We expect that RET participants will take part in the Quarknet Workshop (described
above).
The program dates are July 10 through August 18, 2000 (6 weeks). Participation in the program is
full-time. The program is open to 5 teachers and the stipend is $700/per week. Academic
credit is available upon request and completion of the program requirements.
Our past research activities have covered:
Teachers will have the opportunity to experience hands-on research techniques and procedures, participate in one of the many physics projects being worked on here, in addition to developing an Educational Transfer Plan (ETP). The ETP's are based on the development and application of their research into the high school environment. University outreach and applications in the classroom will also be addressed.
