Report from the SCIPP Teachers Physics Workshop

Saturday, November 13, 1999

The Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) held an all-day Physics Workshop for teachers on November 13, 1999. The workshop had 3 primary goals:

  1. Present on-going research in physics at UCSC to high school teachers
  2. Discuss planned collaborations between UCSC and high school teachers
  3. Build a network of teachers and UCSC staff to increase future collaboration.

1) As the agenda (Attachment A) shows, UCSC faculty spent part of their Saturday reporting on their research which spans the whole distance scale between the largest structures in the universe to the smallest elementary particles. This part of the program was especially appreciated by all attending teachers and received praise for the outstanding level.

  1. The workshop gave the opportunity to discuss the existing plans for collaborations between teachers and the university, i.e. SCIPP, and the UCSC Physics and Mathematics Departments. Based on a questionnaire distributed to the teachers, we have now a list of teachers interested in the following activities, and we will contact them shortly:

  1. Seminar in Modern Physics Topics (Spring Quarter)
  2. Teacher Summer Program (in association with Quarknet), 2-3 weeks
  3. Research Experience for Teachers, 8 weeks during the summer
  4. Visits of high schools by UCSC faculty or students
  5. Visits of UCSC by high school classes
  6. Use of Physics Laboratories by high school students
  7. Arranging students’ visits in research laboratories (SLAC, Lick Observatory)
  8. Traveling physics demonstration

A few special requests were also voiced. One of them is to increase high school students awareness of financial aid programs offered at UCSC.

3) The workshop brought together 50 educators from the university and local schools. Attachment B lists the attendees. We made an effort to compile a database of physics teachers in the area. In addition to using our contacts from our summer research programs, we received addresses of physics teachers from the local chapter of the American Association of Physics Teacher, IISME, EPC, SLAC, among others. We contacted all teachers individually, and published the events and opportunities in notices on institutional bulletin boards. For future events, we will continue to reach the largest audience possible.

The workshop was supported in part by SCIPP and the UCSC Educational Partnership Center (EPC). Its success can be attributed to the organizational efforts of Jacqueline Pizzuti.
