Detection of compact sources in maps of the CMB using linear filters

The detection of extragalactic points sources and SZ clusters in maps
of the CMB is very important. The extragalactic point sources are
distant galaxies that appear as point-like objects convolved with the
beam of the instrument used for the observation. They are an important
source of contamination in CMB maps, and, together with other diffuse
Galactic emissions, they must be removed before the data can be used
for CMB studies. In addition, our knowledge of the populations of
radio and infrared galaxies at microwave frequencies is very poor,
particularly in the range of frequencies that Planck will observe
(30-857 GHz). Analogously, one can look for SZ clusters in CMB maps,
and there is a lot of science that can be extracted from them. In
this talk I will present different methods that we have used to detect
point sources and SZ clusters using wavelets (the Mexican hat wavelet
family) and linear filters (matched filter, scale adaptive filter and
matched multifilter) in realistic simulations of Planck and in WMAP
3yr and 5yr data.
