Detection of Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes
With the RHESSI Spacecraft

Notes

  • Location error for these data is on the order of RHESSI's altitude, 600 km, and possibly as high as 1000 km or more for intrinsically bright bursts.

  • The latitude and longitude given for each event corresponds to RHESSI's position at the time of detection.

    Announcements

  • 01/Oct/05 -- We are currently filling in the July/August 2005 gap between the long data file covering the early mission and the realtime data begun in mid August 2005. These data are currently appearing in this file. Once we're caught up, we'll get all the data into a single unified format again (and in chronological order).

  • 01/Sep/05 -- Automatic, rapid-response generation of RHESSI TGF data is now in "beta-test" mode. Look for the latest results in this file. Latency will usually be between 12 and 72 hours. The flashes may not appear in exact chronological order. A tool to indicate what data have already been searched is upcoming, as is the record for July and August.

  • 14/Jul/05 -- Monthly files and cumulative files have been updated with May and June 2005 data.

  • 09/Jun/05 -- IMPORTANT CORRECTION: A clock-drift file stopped being updated on Jan 16, 2005, so we have had to reprocess the TGFs from January to April 2005. The TGF times at the satellite have been corrected to be slightly earlier: the correction begins at 1ms for the flash of 18 January and grows linearly to 63ms for the last flash in April. IF YOU HAVE BEEN COMPARING 2005 TGF TIMES WITH OTHER DATA SETS, YOU SHOULD REVISIT THOSE COMPARISONS. We apologize for the problem.

  • 08/Jun/05 -- May 2005 added to the monthly files.

  • 30/May/05 -- June 2003, March and April 2005 now included in both data formats (monthly and total).

  • 29/May/05 -- June 2003, March and April 2005 added to monthly files, but not yet included in the overall file.

  • 09/May/05 -- We now have a single ASCII file with one TGF on each line, in chronological order, for easier machine reading. The columns are year, month, day, hour, minute, seconds, latitude, longitude (East), altitude (km), where the latter are spacecraft coordinates at the time of the flash.

  • 08/May/05 -- Please note, a map showing the geographic location of most of the TGFs to date worldwide is available under "Related Links" above. Also, all of 2003, except June, has been added. Note the TGF counter reads 453 events to date!
