Team Re-Entry Softball Box Scores for Spring 2017

Game #1: Re-Entry vs. Sons of Pitches (April 28, 2017)

Re-Entry was declared the victor by forfeit.

Game #2: Re-Entry vs. Softball Player (May 5, 2017)

inning:1234567Runs
Softball Player 0 0 0 4 3 5 x 12
Re-Entry 3 8 0 2 1 x x14

Re-Entry's roster was severely depleted for this game, with only three mend and four woman available to play. Moreover, Howie (who is currently on the disabled list with a separated shoulder) was drafted into action in order to provide (the minimum of) seven fielders. Our manager, Taylor, made a bold decision by opting for only two outfielders (Elijah and Andrew), which allowed Vanessa to play catcher. With Howie's range at short severely affected by his injury, Re-Entry knew it was in for a challenge.

Nevertheless, Re-Entry was able to hold Softball Player scoreless for the first three innings, as our two outfielders impressively covered a significant amount of real estate. Meanwhile a two run triple by Elijah started the Re-Entry scoring in the first inning. Jenn followed up with an RBI single, and Re-Entry had an early three run lead. In the bottom of the second, it seemed that there were always two runners on board when Elijah came up to bat. Elijah replicated his first inning feat with another two run triple and topped that later in the inning with a three run homerun. Jenn repeated her RBI single again (on the third at last pitch of the at bat just like in the first inning). By the end of the second inning, Re-Entry had expanded its lead to 11--0.

The Re-Entry bats cooled off in the third inning---three up and three down. At this point, Softball Player began to take advantage of the depleted Re-Entry defense. Suddenly, they had scored four runs and were threatening to score more. An errant throw to second base ended up in left field, as the Softball Player runner headed for third base. But then he got greedy and tried to score. Andrew in left field scooped up the ball and fired a perfect strike to Vanessa at home. She tagged out the Softball Player runner, who was so surprised that he did not even attempt to slide. This webgem ended the inning, and ultimately may have preserved the eventual Re-Entry victory.

Re-entry struck back for two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Softball Player scored three more runs in the top of the fifth inning and the score now stood at 13--7 in Re-Entry's favor. But, it was clear that Softball Player was now better able to put the ball in play and take advantage of the deficit of Re-Entry outfielders. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Elijah had a chance to put the game away when he came up to bat with the bases loaded and two outs, with one run already in. But, the Softball Player outfielders were now better prepared (playing very deep), and a long fly ball that would have gone for extra bases earlier in the game turned into out number three.

Due to time constraints, the sixth inning was declared the final inning of the game. Softball Player needed seven runs to tie or else the game would be over. But Re-Entry could only manage one out, while Softball Player scored five times. With runners on first and second, it was looking like the Softball Player comeback might succeed. The next batter hit a sharp grounder between shortstop and third base. But, Andrew in left field was ready for this. He charged the ground ball and was able to get the force out with an accurate throw to Taylor at third base. Still, there were runners on first and second, although now there were two outs. With the result of the game still in doubt, the next Softball Player batter hit a ground ball up the middle. The barefooted Softball Player pitcher (who pitches to his team), was unable to get out the way, and the ball caromed off his foot into right field. However, by the league rules, the batter is out if the ball hits the pitcher. Thus, this last play resulted in the third out of the inning. Re-Entry had survived the late inning Softball Player rally and claimed the 14--12 victory.

Game #3: Re-Entry vs. Bad News Brewskis (May 12, 2017)

inning:1234567Runs
Bad News Brewskis 3 0 0 2 3 x x 8
Re-Entry 4 1 4 0 x x x9

In the top of the first inning, the first Bad News Brewskis batter hit a line drive to right field that got past the outfielders for a homerun to open the scoring. After a single and two infield outs, it looked like Re-Entry would limit the damage. But, inspired by their first batter, the Bad News Brewskis again challenged the outfielders in right field and again succeeded in adding two runs with a homerun to right. Thus, Re-Entry came up to bat trailing for the first time during the season.

The first two pitches to Joe were ruled to be low pitches despite an apparent ground ball out to shortstop. Joe had new life and opened up the bottom of the first inning with a single. Taylor followed with another single and Andrew doubled in the first Re-Entry run of the game. Without Elijah in the lineup to supply the power, it was clear that Re-Entry would have to string consecutive hits to produce runs. With the help of a sacrifice fly from Mike, and a two-run double by Rob, Re-Entry claimed a 4--3 lead at the end of the first inning.

The Re-Entry defense was solid in the top of the second inning, holding the Bad News Brewskis scoreless. Meanwhile, in the bottom of the second inning, Bryce opened the inning with a double and moved to third base on a ground out. With one out and a runner on third base, Howie decided to test his separated shoulder by taking his turn at bat. A ground ball up the middle was fielded by the shortstop and in a very nice play, Howie was out at first base by a step. But, the runner from third base scored, and Re-Entry extended its lead to 5--3.

The Re-Entry defense was equally stingy in the bottom of the third inning. With one out and a runner on second base, Andrew at shortstop snagged a line drive to his left and easily completed the double play by stepping on second base to end the inning and earn Andrew the webgem of the game. In the bottom of the third inning, Re-Entry put up another four spot by once again stringing together multiple base hits consisting almost entirely of singles. Re-Entry now had a 9--3 lead.

The Bad News Brewskis started to chip away in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two runs to close the gap to five runs. Re-Entry was unable to add on in the bottom of the fourth inning, and wend down quietly, three up and three down. At this point, the umpires declared that there would be time for only one more inning, so the fifth inning would be the last one.

The Bad News Brewskis put up a valiant attempt to come back. After scoring one run and with a runner on base, the next Bad News Brewskis batter sent a line drive into the gap just out of reach of our center fielder. The result was a two run homerun, and suddenly the Re-Entry lead was down to one run. With two outs, the next Bad News Brewskis batter hit a weak ground ball and was able to beat the throw to first for a single. The following batter sent a flare to short right field that fell between Katie in right and Howie in right center. Katie manged to get the ball back into the infield to keep the run from scoring. But now, the Bad News Brewskis had the tying run at third and the go ahead run at second. Finally, on the final (third) pitch, the next batter hit a sharp ground ball to Andrew at shortstop. His accurate throw to Taylor at first was the final out of the game, and Re-Entry escaped with a 9--8 victory.

Game #4: Re-Entry vs. Ball Grabbers (May 21, 2017)

Re-Entry was declared the victor by forfeit.

In the semi-finals, Re-Entry faced Softball Player for the second time this season. In the top of the first inning, Softball Player jumped out to a two run lead. Re-Entry responded in the bottom of the first inning with a lead off homerun by Mike, but three quick out follows, leaving Re-Entry trailing 2--1. The Re-Entry defense tightened with good plays from Andrew at shortstop and Taylor at first, along with flawless fielding by Elijah and Mike in left and center field, respectively. Softball Player hardly threatened as Re-Entry held them scoreless over the next three innings.

Meanwhile, the Re-Entry bats came alive in the second inning and posted nine runs. Remarkably, eight runs scored after two outs were recorded thanks to nine consecutive base hits. Moreover, the third out of the inning came on a bases loaded single by Joe that plated two runs. The third out resulted when Howie was tagged out at third base due to a very nice defensive play by Softball Player in which the third baseman cut off the throw home from left field and then fired a strike to the shortstop covering third base. This was the webgem defensive play of the game.

A solo homerun from Elijah and an RBI ground out by Mike accounted for solo runs in the next two innings, and the score stood at 12--2 entering the top of the fifth inning. The Softball Player offense came alive in the fifth inning, scoring four times. Andrew almost pulled off an amazing Brandon Crawford-like catch as he chased down a flare in short center field. He managed to get his glove on the ball, but the ball popped out at the last moment.

With Re-Entry ahead by a 12--6 score, it was time to put the nail in the coffin. Elijah led off the inning with his second solo homerun of the game. Six of the next seven hitters had basehits, as five more runs crossed the plate. Finally, in his second at bat of the inning, Elijah hit his third homerun of the game--a two run shot to deep left field. Re-Entry now had a 20--6 lead.

The game official then called the sixth inning the final inning of the game. Despite the comfortable lead, Re-Entry wanted a very quick final inning and they got it. Three up three down, with the final out fielded by Howie, playing second base, as he hauled in an infield pop fly behind first base to end the game. With the 20--6 victory, Re-Entry qualifies for the Championship game.

The Championship Game was a rematch of the Re-Entry vs. Bad News Brewskis regular season game, in which Re-Entry squeaked by with a one run victory. On this afternoon, it was a game for the Championship T-shirts. After holding the Bad News Brewskis scoreless after their first two hitters got on base, Mike opened up the game with a homerun to right field, replicating his first at bat in the semi-finals. Three singles by Elijah, Jenn and Clara loaded the bases. Joe then delivered a two out bases loaded single for 2 RBIs. The Bad News Brewskis cut off the throw to the plate, and Clara was caught between second and third base, resulting in the third out of the inning. Re-Entry had a 3--0 lead after one inning.

The Bad News Brewskis responded with a three run home run in the top of the second inning to tie the score. They were threatening to take the lead with two outs and two persons on base, when Jenn saved a couples of runs with a shoestring catch on a sinking line drive to right field for the third out of the inning. This earned her the defensive webgem of the game.

The Re-Entry offense got on track in the bottom of the second inning with a two out rally that yielded eight runs. With runners on first and third and two outs, Ashley began the onslaught with an RBI single. Howie followed with an RBI double to left field. A single by Taylor, a double by Mike and a singe by Jenn accounted for the next four runs. Then, Elijah hit a massive homerun to the deepest part of the yard in center field to drive in the last two runs of the inning. After two innings, Re-Entry had an 11--3 lead.

Over the next two innings, the Re-Entry defense held the Bad News Brewskis scoreless, but the offense only managed to add a single run in each of the next two innings, increasing the lead to 13--3. Although the third inning started off well with a triple by Rob, the next three batters were retired, allowing only the one run when Rob scored on a ground ball out by Vanessa. But, in the top of the fifth inning, the Bad News Brewski bats came alive. After their second three run homerun of the game and a solo run that followed, the Bad News Brewskis drew closer, with the score now at 13--7. Re-Entry and the Bad News Brewskis traded one run innings over the next three half innings, so when the game entered the seventh and final inning, the score stood at 15--8.

Despite the seven run lead, the last inning is always the most difficult. The first three Bad News Brewskis reached base to start the top of the seventh inning, and suddenly there were runners at second and third and none out after an errant throw failed to cut down the runner attempting to score. The next batter hit a sharp ground ball to Howie at shortstop. Despite a brief bobble, an accurate throw to first and a superb stretch by Taylor nailed the runner at first base, and Re-Entry had their first out of the inning. The second out of the inning followed on the next play, with a sharp ground ball to Clara at second base. She managed to knock the ball down and smother it, and an accurate throw to first barely beat the runner. There were now two outs, but three runs had crossed the plate. The Bad News Brewskis were still four runs down when the next hitter hit a double to extend the inning. But, the final batter hit a ground ball to Clara, fielded cleanly, and the throw to first was in plenty of time.

With that final out, Re-Entry claimed the Spring 2017 UCSC Intramurals Coed Championship, with a 15--11 victory over a spirited Bad News Brewskis squad. Re-Entry tips our caps to our opponents, who demonstrated sportsmanship and fair play well beyond the standard level of this sport, which was especially commendable in light of the fact the the UCSC Intramurals organization was not able to provide umpires for the game. With this victory, Re-Entry claims a sweep with two straight softball championships over the 2016--2017 academic year.
