Schedule a Visit
Come Visit the Institute
It is possible for local physics/science classes to visit SCIPP and meet the scientists who work here.
SCIPP can provide introductory materials for students in the class to review before their visit, helping them make the most of their time with the scientists.
Sample agenda for a half-day visit:
Introduction to SCIPP science
SCIPP facilitates research in theoretical and experimental particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology, and atmospheric physics, as well as neuroscience and medical imaging.
Discussion of career paths
Physics isn’t restricted to academia! Learn about various career opportunities for physics students.
Meet the scientists
At the heart of SCIPP are our researchers and staff. Learn more about research and the day-to-day operations of SCIPP scientists.
Visit facilities
See the facilities that SCIPP physicists utilize, such as our detector lab.
Explore UCSC campus
Embark on a self tour UCSC’s scenic campus, from the beautiful redwoods by upper campus to the sprawling east meadow.

Please email SCIPP’s Outreach Coordinator, Laura Bakken, to schedule a visit.

In-class presentation/activity
SCIPP, and Quarknet would like to offer an opportunity to local physics teachers and high school students for in-class visits where we teach a lesson on particle physics. QuarkNet is an organization that partners with SCIPP to help connect high school students and teachers with physicists who offer masterclasses, workshops, camps, and more.
One activity that we’ve done in the past with high school classes is an abbreviated version of the Big Analysis of Muons in ATLAS (BAMA), which introduces students to the workings of real collider physics and detection and gives students an opportunity to engage in some data analysis. SCIPP’s goal is to make this a recurring event for interested teachers, hosting it annually for a class period during a specific semester or curriculum unit. If assigning any introductory homework, SCIPP can provide some materials for students to go through before the activity.
Please email SCIPP’s Outreach Coordinator, Laura Bakken, to schedule a visit.
