UNIVERSITY OF
SANTA CRUZ INSTITUTE FOR PARTICLE PHYSICS
Postdoctoral Scholar in High-Energy Gamma-Ray Astrophysics
with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope
The Santa Cruz
Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP) invites applications for a
Postdoctoral Scholar in the field of high-energy gamma-ray astrophysics
and particle physics for work on the Fermi
Gamma-ray Space Telescope mission (formerly named GLAST), which very
recently started on-orbit operations.
The Large Area Telescope (LAT)
on Fermi studies the sky from 20 MeV to over 300 GeV,
opening new opportunities for studies of a wide variety of high-energy
phenomena, including active galaxies, the optical-UV extragalactic
background light, pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, diffuse emissions, and searches
for signatures of new phenomena such as particle dark matter. The Fermi
Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) provides
spectral and timing information of gamma-ray bursts in the 8 keV to 30 MeV range.
As a core institution in the LAT Collaboration, UCSC is actively involved in the
development, operation, management, and science analysis leadership of the
LAT. The successful candidate will have opportunities to pursue all the
above science analysis topics, including multiwavelength
studies, along with detailed studies of instrument performance.
SCIPP groups maintain a diverse and active research
program in particle astrophysics and particle physics. Close ties with
Departments of Physics and Astronomy and with the University of California
Observatories/Lick Observatory contribute to
a stimulating academic and research environment.
