Interns researched and documented:
This years internship's two primary projects are ADOM and the Muon lifetime experiment.
ADOM, or Aerial Detector Of Muons, is a balloon suspended Quarknet DAQ, scintillator, GPS, and radio transmitter. ADOM's primary function is to detect the presence of muons in the atmosphere and record the data representing the count rate. On the ground, the data is analyzed into two minute segments that count the occurrences of muons, thus allowing one to calculate the rate of events per minute.
The Muon lifetime experiment, like its name implies, is the comparison of two events in a set of four scintillators to calculate the time between those events and define the relative life times for such muons. It is expected that we will see an exponential decay rate for the muons.
ADOM was launched July 26 at 11:00AM at UCSC. The data it collected was analyzed. See ADOM report for more information.
