Team Re-Entry Softball Line Scores for Spring 2018

Game #1: Re-Entry vs. Ryan Reynolds Fan Club (April 20, 2018)

inning:1234567Runs
Ryan Reynolds Fan Club 1 2 2 1 2 1 x 9
Re-Entry 3 5 6 0 6 x x 20

In the decisive 20--9 victory, it is notable that Re-Entry scored the majority of their runs with two outs. The offense was powered by multiple home runs from both Andrew and Elijah. A good Re-Entry defensive effort dashed the hopes of any comeback by the Ryan Reynolds Fan Club.

Game #2: Re-Entry vs. The Softballers (April 27, 2018)

inning:1234567Runs
Re-Entry 4 0 10 1 6 x x 21
The Softballers 1 3 0 0 5 x x 9

In the top of the first inning, with one run in and two Re-Entry players on base, Rob stepped to the plate with two outs and delivered a three run home run to deep right-center field. With that drive, Re-Entry jumped to the early 4--0 lead. The Softballers responded with one run in the bottom of the first, but Re-Entry managed to escape a bases loaded jam to limit the damage. But after a one-two-three top of the second, The Softballers responded in the bottom of the second inning with an impressive three run home run of their own, tying the score at 4--4.

However, Re-Entry batters came alive in the third inning. Following a two run home run over the head of the center fielder by Mike, and a triple to deep left field by Elijah, Re-Entry continued to pressure The Softballers defense, primarily with singles and aggressive base running. By the time ten runs crossed the plate, there was still only one out and the ten run rule was invoked. The score now stood at 14--4 in Re-Entry's favor.

It was now time for the Re-Entry defense to shine. The Softballers were blanked in the next two innings. One of the highlights in the bottom of the third inning came with a runner on first base. Following a single to center field, The Softballer runner attempted to take the extra base. Mike fielded the ball cleanly an unleashed an accurate throw to third base. Howie caught the ball and in the same motion applied a swipe tag on the runner just before he reached the bag. This play earned Mike and Howie the defensive webgem of the game.

Entering the fifth and final inning (due to the lateness of the hour), Re-Entry had a comfortable 15--4 lead. But adding on is important, and Re-Entry was up to the task. A three run homerun down the left field line by Geena and a solo homerun over the left fielder's head by Mike (his second round tripper of the day) contributed to the six run inning. Howie's triple to the right-center field gap drove in the final Re-Entry run. In the bottom half of the fifth inning, a few defensive miscues gave The Softballers a momentary lift. But, after they plated five, Re-Entry ended their hopes of a comeback to finish off the 21--9 victory.

Game #3: Re-Entry vs. Los Okways (May 4, 2018)

inning:1234567Runs
Re-Entry 10 10 10 x x x x 30
Los Okways 1 5 0 x x x x 6

It was pretty clear from the start that this one was going to be a rout. In the top of the first inning, Re-Entry reached ten runs before any outs were recorded. The strange thing was that every hit in the inning was a single! After giving up one run in the bottom of the first, Re-Entry repeated the ten run outburst in the second inning. This time, however, six runs out of the ten scored as a result of the long ball. Two homeruns by Elijah (a solo homerun to left field and later in the inning a two run homerun to right field), and a three run homerun to right field by Bryce contributed to the outburst.

In the bottom of the second, the Re-Entry defense lost focus. A number of miscues and errant throws led to five runs by Los Okways. But, with the score at 20--6, the Re-Entry offense was far from finished. Two homeruns by Andrew (a two run homerun to center fields and later in the inning a three run homerun to right center field), and then not to be outdone, a two run homerun to center field by Elijah (his third of the contest), were the big blows of the third straight ten run inning. I believe that the invocation of the ten run rule in three consecutive innings set an all time Re-Entry record.

Due to the length of the three ten run innings, the umpire declared that the bottom of the 3rd inning would be the last. To make up for the poor defensive play in the bottom of the second inning, Re-Entry recorded three consecutive outs to finish the game with a 30--6 victory.

Game #4: Re-Entry vs. SC Sluggers (May 11, 2018)

inning:1234567Runs
Re-Entry 3 6 3 3 1 0 x 16
SC Sluggers 1 5 9 2 3 x x 20

After jumping to a 12--6 lead, the SC Sluggers plated nine runs in the bottom of the third. After that, Re-Entry tied the game at 15--15 in the top of the fourth, only to fall behind again in the bottom of the fourth. Behind by four runs going into the last inning, the Re-Entry bats fell silent, and Re-Entry recorded its first loss of the season.

Game #5: Re-Entry vs. The Flying Chanclas (May 18, 2018)

inning:1234567Runs
The Flying Chanclas 3 1 3 0 0 x x 7
Re-Entry 5 1 3 1 x x x 10

With a depleted lineup, Re-Entry managed to eke out a 10--7 victory over The Flying Chanclas to close the regular season. With that victory, re-Entry secured sole possession of second place and earned the second seed going into the playoffs.

Semi-finals: Re-Entry vs. The Softballers (June 1, 2018)

inning:1234567Runs
The Softballers 0 3 0 0 1 5 x 9
Re-Entry 8 1 2 2 4 x x 17

Re-Entry got off to a very quick start with eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and then coasted to a 17-9 Semifinals victory over The Softballers. The game was pretty much decided after one inning, although a five run outburst by The Softballers in the last inning made the final score more respectable.

The Championship Game was a rematch of the Re-Entry vs. SC Sluggers regular season game, in which Re-Entry lost in a close contest by the score of 20--16. On this afternoon, it was a game for the Championship T-shirts. In the top of the first inning, the first two Re-Entry batters hit consecutive singles. Following a groundout, Elijah blasted a double to deep left center field, but a strong throw from the outfield left runners on second and third with only one run scoring. What followed was the critical play that changed the psychology of the game. Andrew hit a ground ball to the hole between second and third. As the shortstop field the ball, Joe who was the runner at third hesitated. This allowed Andrew to beat the throw to first base. Meanwhile, Joe broke for the plate. The first baseman threw a strike to the catcher as Joe slid under the tag. Joe was safe, but the lone umpire on the field who was positioned up the first base line called Joe out. With no video repeal available, Re-Entry was denied the run and a potentially big inning. Mike followed with an RBI single to left field, with Elijah scoring easily for the second Re-Entry run, but that was the end of the scoring, as Katie grounded into a force play to end the inning.

The SC Sluggers responded with a big inning. Aided by a number of defensive miscues by Re-Entry, including a missed opportunity 6-4-3 double play when the throw to first base was wild, SC Sluggers plated ten runs with only one recorded out. The ten run rule was invoked and Re-Entry now trailed by a score of 10--2.

In essence, that first inning ended all Re-Entry hopes of a three-peat in the Championship game. From then on, the Re-Entry bats went quiet, recording only four singles over the next five innings. The SC Sluggers, an all male squad made up of members of the UCSC baseball club, subsequently went on cruise control, fielding only six players over the the last three innings. The Re-Entry defense recovered from the calamitous first inning and gave up only four more runs during the remainder of the game. But, in the absence of any sustained offensive rallies, there was little chance of a comeback.

In the top of the last inning, Re-Entry made one final attempt to make the score respectable. After an inning opening single by Mike, Bryce hit a line drive toward center field for a double (as the SC Sluggers had only two outfielders at the time). With second and third base occupied and one out, Spencer drove in the final Re-Entry run with a groundout to the shortstop. A line drive snagged by the second baseman off of Geena's bat was the third and final out of the game.

One cannot argue much against the decisive victory by the SC Sluggers in the Championship Game. However, this game represents the final nail in the coffin for Intramurals coed softball at UCSC. This season, the UCSC Intrmurals softball league consisted of five coed teams and one all male team made up of members of the UCSC men's baseball club. Indeed, Re-Entry prevailed as the Champion among the five coed teams with an undefeated record. But, it was predictable from the start of the season that the SC Sluggers, sometimes fielding only six players during the regular season games (as well as the semifinals and the last three innings of the Championship game), were going to claim the Championship tee-shirts.
