new!!! Latest news

With their 23--4 victory over the Big Bangers, Re-Entry maintained their undefeated season and the tie for first place in the Coed Premier Softball Friday 5:30 pm League. The victory over the Big Bangers marked the tenth straight victory (with no losses) in the storied rivalry that began in the fall of 2007.

According to IM Sports Coordinator, Linda Clauss, the regular season is now officially over, with no further games until the playoffs, which are slated to start on Friday May 29.

On Friday May 15, the softball fields will be used to make up Thursday League games that were canceled due to the rain on May 7. The softball fields will be available to the Friday League softball teams on Friday May 22, in case we wish to schedule any practices or exhibition games in preparation for the playoffs.

Next Game

The next official league game will be a playoff game. It is tentatively scheduled for Friday May 29 at 5:30 pm. Our first opponent has not yet been determined. Stay tuned for further clarifications. At present, it is not clear whether there will be any more regular season games before the start of the playoffs (which presumably will take place following the Memorial Day weekend). Stay tuned for further information when available.

Please plan on arriving at least 30 minutes early for warmups. If you cannot play in this game, you should contact the captain Taylor Sills (tsills@ucsc.edu) and the general manager Eddie Santos (edrsanto@ucsc.edu) immediately, so that we can ensure a full lineup.

The Big Bangers jumped out to a 1--0 lead in the top of the first, primarily due to some leaky Re-Entry defense. Actually, it is somewhat remarkable that Re-Entry escaped with only a one run deficit, as the Big Bangers left runners on second and third stranded to end the inning. Andrew opened up the bottom of the first with a solo homerun to right center field to quickly tie the score. With one runner on base and two outs, Eddie delivered a two run homerun to center field, giving Re-Entry the 3--1 lead.

The Re-Entry defense settled down, as it held the Big Bangers scoreless in the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the second, Re-Entry extended their lead to 7--1, when A.J. delivered a two run double with runners on second and third and two outs. The game continued at a brisk pace, with no scoring in the third inning by either team. The Re-Entry defense continued to hold firm, quickly retiring the Big Bangers in the top of the fourth inning. But, with only a six run Re-Entry lead, the game still seemed up for grabs.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Re-Entry decided it was finally time to put the game away. With some help from miscues in the field by the Big Bangers, Re-Entry managed to push ten runs across the plate without the help of the big fly. Among the highlights of the inning was Howie scoring from second base on a sacrifice fly by Andrew, and Omar taking an extra base with a highlight reel slide into third base. After batting around, the ten run rule was invoked on a double by Andrew, which drove in the ninth and tenth run of the inning. Re-Entry now had a commanding 17--1 lead.

The Big Bangers threatened to break their streak of goose eggs, putting runners on second and third with two outs. But, our first basewoman, Clara, leaped in the air to snag a line drive headed for right field to end the top of the fifth inning and claim the game's only web gem. In the bottom of the fifth inning. A.J. hit a line drive shot over the left center fielders head, for a two run homerun to extend the lead to 19--1. The Big Bangers again threatened to score in the sixth inning. But with two outs, a nice defensive play by Jenn to knock the ball down and then alertly shovel the ball to Howie, resulted in a force out at second base, as the throw just beat the baserunner.

In the top of the sixth inning, Re-Entry continued the homerun barrage with a two run homerun to center field from Andrew and a towering two run homerun over the left fielder's head courtesy of A.J. In the top of the seventh inning, the Big Bangers finally put some pressure on the Re-Entry defense. In the end, they were able to push across three runs. With a Big Banger on third base and two outs, the runner tried to score on a dribbler in front of home plate. But, our catcher Dana quickly pounced on the ball and tagged out the charging runner to end the game.

Final score: Re-Entry 23, Big Bangers 4, as Re-Entry continued the domination against their long time rivals with their tenth straight victory in UCSC Intramurals softball play since the fall of 2007.

Location of the Softball Fields

All fields are adjacent to the East Field House. The field closest to the swimming pool is Field 1. It is also adjacent to the sand volleyball court as shown in this photograph. Follow the running track in the direction of Monterey Bay to reach Field 2. Keep following the track as it turns, and you will then end up at Field 3, which is the furthest of the three softball fields from the Field House. The backstops for the three fields can all be seen in this photograph.
