SCIPP FPGA Website

Intro

SCIPP wants to extend its expertese into digital electronic design. Pushed by faculty, and aided by the technical staff, we hope the lab undergradutes will achieve this for us, at least until a postgraduate student can take over!

Field Programable Gated Arrays are cool! You are probably reading this because your work in the SCIPP lab involves an FPGA device in the data flow. This page contains very brief instructions designed to get you started on the main software tools, and also includes a few step-by-step tutorials to get you going very quickly. The inventory section should let you see if there is any equipment available for you to get hands on experience.

Modelsim Tutorial

You can find the crash course on Modelsim here (PDF). It is still the first draft, so stay tuned for updates. Feedback is greatly appreciated, so email Kunal with suggestions and comments.

Lab Standards!

The Xilinx university program is good to us. In return, you will only use Xilinx FPGA's, and the Xilinx developement software packages (described below). For simulation, Mentor Graphics is good to us, and you will use the ModelSim application! If you want a job in industry, you should use VHDL, but because its hard to read, we choose to use Verilog. To keep oursleves all on the same page, I strongly urge you to use Verilog.

Software Tools

There are at least Software Tools you will want to learn, and possibley a third if we brought you over from CE /EE. ISE is the basic design environment for Verilog programs.
